What’s the Difference between a Neck Lift and Neck Liposuction?

Posted on July 21, 2015 by: Dr. Rocheford

If you’re like most people, you focus on your face but you forget to take good care of the skin on your neck. Maybe you forget to apply moisturizer to your neck, or maybe you don’t extend your anti-aging skincare regimen down to your neck.

If that’s the case, your neck may be revealing your true age – and you’ll need innovative and effective procedures to help turn back the clock.

The Best Cure for “Turkey Neck

As we age, our skin begins to lose its collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks for firm, younger-looking skin. When this happens in facial skin, the face appears droopy, saggy, and less contoured than before. This effect around the neck, however, can create what’s known as “turkey neck” – where sagging skin and muscles create a loose and jowly appearance.

For clients of Rocheford Plastic Surgery in Woodbury, MN, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Heather Rocheford offers a variety of options to erase turkey neck. Two of the most effective options for treating turkey neck include the neck lift and neck liposuction. Let’s take a quick look at the differences between the two procedures:

Neck Lift: This procedure – which is also known as a platysmaplasty – focuses on lifting and tightening the neck muscles. Sagging muscles can impact the look of the skin, which is why a neck lift is the best option for clients with moderate to severe drooping skin.

During the neck lift procedure, Dr. Rocheford will create small incisions to access and remove any fat over the neck muscles. Once this step is completed, Dr. Rocheford will pull the sagging muscle, creating a tighter and more youthful look. During the last step of the procedure, excess skin is trimmed and removed.

Neck Liposuction: A neck liposuction is a great option for clients who have an excessive amount of neck fat, which can create an undesirable jowly appearance. Neck liposuction does not impact the muscles of the neck; therefore, this option is best for clients with mild to moderate turkey neck.

Dr. Rocheford makes small incisions in the neck area, which allows her to insert a small cannula into the neck. From there, she uses traditional liposuction to remove unwanted fat deposits. Excess skin is not removed in this procedure. A compression garment will be worn to help the skin redrape after the procedure.

As you can see, there are plenty of options to treat sagging neck skin!
