Male Breast Reduction & Liposuction

Posted on June 1, 2020 by: Dr. Rocheford

Gynecomastia is a difficult issue for many men to contend with because it can harm their confidence and body image. Gynecomastia is defined as an area of fatty tissue around the breasts that can become large and uncomfortable. Gynecomastia can be treated with male breast reduction surgery at Rocheford Plastic Surgery.

What is Gynecomastia?

The basic answer to this question is that gynecomastia is a large amount of growth in the breast tissue that makes the breasts of a male swell. This can occur at any stage of life. All children are born with breast tissue regardless of their gender, but the development of testosterone in the male body limits the growth of breast tissue throughout the life of a boy.

This is an issue that is most commonly seen during puberty when a growing male goes through a series of hormonal changes, with testosterone levels not high enough to halt the development of larger breasts. However, the condition can arise for a variety of reasons. Male breast reduction surgery is just one of the potential treatments for a male who is struggling with pain in their enlarged breasts or feels their confidence has been diminished by their breast development.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The most commonly seen cause of gynecomastia is a decrease in the hormone testosterone. There are several other causes of gynecomastia, including:

  • Medications
  • Street drugs
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Liver failure
  • Malnutrition

The Process of Male Breast Reduction Surgery

One of the main treatments for gynecomastia is to undergo the process of male breast reduction surgery that can have a positive impact on a patient’s life. Male breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia with the surgery taking just two hours to complete.

Gynecomastia can be treated with Liposuction or surgical removal of excess breast tissue and skin. Patients will be in moderate pain and discomfort with pain medications usually needed for between two and seven days, depending on the individual.

Recovery Time is Short

The recovery period after gynecomastia is two to six weeks. Patients may resume exercise two weeks after the surgery is completed. Scarring is not a major issue after gynecomastia surgery. Scars may be present and visible for around the first two to four months but fade over time. Results from gynecomastia surgery last up to ten years for the majority of patients.

Pairing Gynecomastia Surgery with Liposuction

It’s relatively common for patients to choose to pair gynecomastia surgery with liposuction for other areas of the body as well. In particular, patients often choose to pair the procedure with liposuction for their flanks or “love handles.” Stubborn fat can build up in this area in addition to the chest for many sufferers of gynecomastia. Liposuction involves permanently removing this fat by suctioning it away, revealing tone and masculine body contour.
