How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal works by generating heat within the hair follicle by administering light energy. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment in each hair shaft where it travels into the follicle in the skin. There, it heats up and damages the natural hair growth mechanisms that produce more hair. Once damaged, the follicles become less effective at producing new growth. Over time and with multiple treatments throughout the hair growth cycle, follicle function can be slowed drastically or even completely reduced.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Laser hair removal can treat virtually any area of the body where you have unwanted hair growth. However, some common areas include the legs, arms, chest, shoulders, back, bikini area, and face. Your treatment price can depend on your treatment area as well as how much hair growth is present. You can opt to have more than one area treated during your treatment sessions as well.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

What Happens During Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal can be performed right in our Minneapolis-St. Paul practice. You’ll begin by discussing your goals with Dr. Rocheford and our non-surgical team to create the right treatment approach for you and your goals. Then, you’ll relax while a topical numbing cream is applied. You’ll be given protective eye shields as well. Finally, treatment will begin and the specialized handpiece is applied to your treatment area. The length of your treatment session will depend on the size of your treatment area, with small areas like the upper lip taking as little as fifteen minutes total while larger areas like the back can take an hour or more. Afterward, you can return home.

What Can I Expect After Laser Hair Removal?

After your treatment session, you’ll experience some redness and sensitivity at your treatment area, similar to a sunburn. This subsides within a few days, but it’s important to follow some after-care steps during this time like keeping the area moisturized and protected from sun exposure. Most patients need a package of treatments for the best results, and our team will create the ideal treatment package for you based on your goals. It’s best to space your treatments apart by a few weeks in order to treat the hair at each stage of the growth cycle. With a full package of treatments, you’ll experience much easier hair removal at home and smooth, hair-free skin.
