3 Different Types of Breast Augmentation

Posted on February 25, 2014 by: Dr. Rocheford

Breast augmentation is used to lift, enhance, and increase the size of sagging or misshapen breasts. Are you interested in improving the fullness and projection of your bust-line? Before you contact your plastic surgeon, consider the different types of breast augmentation procedures.

1. Breast Implants

Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can even be custom-made for your specific body shape. After administering intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, your cosmetic surgeon will make one or two inconspicuous incisions. The most common incision locations include an inframammary incision in the bottom fold of the breast, transaxillary incision in the underarm, and periareolar incision around the nipple.  Your surgeon will then insert and position the silicone or saline implant just under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. Breast implants are great for women looking to increase their self-confidence and improve their appearance. Implants are also ideal for women undergoing breast reconstruction surgery.

2. Fat Transfer Augmentation

Not interested in implants? You can still increase the size and shape of your breasts without the use of breast implants. Many plastic surgeons provide natural breast augmentation using a method known as fat transfer augmentation. Using liposuction to harvest fat from your problem areas, your plastic surgeon can purify and re-inject your own natural tissue to increase the size of your breasts.

 3. Breast Lifts

Many women lose skin elasticity and volume due to gravity, aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift can be used to raise and firm your breasts for a more youthful appearance. During a breast lift, your plastic surgeon will make several incisions in your breasts to remove excess skin before shifting your nipple and areolas into a higher position. Are you a candidate for a breast lift? If you have flatter, pendulous breasts, down pointing nipples, stretched out areolas, or disproportionate breasts, then a breast lift may be the solution for you.
