What is the Difference Between Botox and Fillers?

Posted on July 29, 2014 by: Dr. Rocheford

Living in today’s modern world means having a bevy of exciting and innovative skin treatments at your fingertips. From medical grade chemical peels to laser skin resurfacing, there’s no end to the procedures that can be done to help you look youthful and refreshed for as long as possible. With this in mind, one of the most effective weapons in your anti-aging arsenal can come in the form of two popular skin injectables: Botox and fillers.

Skin injectables have playing a prominent role in helping both women and men look younger than their ages. What’s more, use of these skin injections have become more popular than ever.

With these skin treatments playing an increasingly common role in the typical anti-aging regimen, there’s just one question remaining: what’s the difference between Botox and fillers?

Botox

Botox was one of the first skin injectables to be introduced to the market, and it remains one of the most common treatments used today. Botox is made of a neurotoxin that effectively freezes the muscles in the treatment area. When the muscle is “frozen” like this, it relaxes the surrounding skin. This softens the look of fine lines and wrinkles, which helps create a more youthful appearance. What’s more, the neurotoxin reduces the muscle’s ability to move, which helps maintain this appearance. The results from Botox can last three to five months before more injections are needed.

Fillers

Fillers are an umbrella term that’s used to describe skin injections like Juvederm, Restalyne, and other brands. These skin injections utilize hyaluronic acid, a natural compound that effectively reinvigorates the skin’s natural collagen production. These create a temporarily firm and youthful appearance in the treatment area. Fillers are great in the lower face, in areas like the nasolabial folds and the marionette lines, where Botox cannot be used. Fillers also tend to last longer than Botox, with results stretching as far as a year after the initial treatment.
