What’s Different About Sculptra®

Posted on March 21, 2018 by: Dr. Rocheford

If you know anything about dermal fillers, you know that there are a lot of them and it can be difficult to keep them all straight. There are many different kinds that treat different areas of the face and body, and it can be hard to know which one will get you the best results. However, if there’s one you should know, it’s Sculptra® Aesthetic— this filler, although there are some similarities, stands out from the rest, and here’s why.

It uses poly-L-lactic acid, not hyaluronic acid

This might sound trivial and boring, but this is an important distinction between Sculptra® and other popular fillers like Juvéderm® or Restylane®. Those two families of dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid— a natural substance found in the skin that retains moisture and nutrients—  to temporarily add volume underneath the skin. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used in suture materials for many years because of its ability to stimulate collagen production. That means that instead of simply adding temporary volume, it stimulates your natural process to create its own.

It’s known for its natural-looking results

While hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be effective in adding volume where it’s needed, it’s easy for them to give a ‘stuffed’ and obvious appearance. Sculptra® Aesthetic is known for appearing natural and subtle, because it’s your own body restoring its own lost volume, which is one of the main, underlying causes of aging signs like wrinkles and folds. Instead of being a ‘fix’ for aging, it rewinds it.

The results are long-lasting

Because hyaluronic acid fillers only use material to add volume, it’s absorbed into the body within a period of time and volume is lost again. Sculptra® creates the same effect with your body’s collagen doing the work, which means the results are long-lasting, even after the poly-L-lactic acid is gone. Although you might need touch-ups along the way because it can’t stop the aging process, you won’t need to worry about more fillers or permanent, surgical options. You’ll need about three initial treatments of Sculptra® before your best results begin to emerge in the following months.
