Our Top 5 Tips for Fall Skincare

Posted on October 28, 2022 by: Dr. Rocheford

As the weather gets colder and dryer, it’s important to change the way you approach skincare. Changing up your skincare regimen based on the season is one of the best ways to ensure your skin always has what it needs to look and feel its best. As you enjoy the autumn colors and cozy sweater weather, here are five of our team’s top skincare recommendations for the coming months.

IPL and Chemical Peels to Get Rid of Sunspots

Sunspots are areas of pigment that occur from sun exposure over the course of the summer. Sunspots can take different forms, but they usually appear like freckles or moles in areas like the face or shoulders. If you’re bothered by brown spots and want to achieve clearer brighter skin, then professional treatments are your best option. IPL (intense pulsed light) is a laser technology that can specifically target pigment and is considered the gold standard in sunspot treatment. Chemical peels are also a great option and can have a variety of other skincare benefits, too. With a personalized treatment plan, you can get rid of pigmentation during a time of the year when it’s easier to avoid sunlight (as is necessary during your short recovery period).

Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Although we begin to have fewer days with sunlight, sunscreen is still just as important as during the summer. Keep using sunscreen daily (even on cloudy days) – select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it every morning to your face, neck, decolletage, and ears. Chemical sunscreens are typically better if you wear makeup daily since they’re not as greasy. However, there are a variety of excellent mineral sunscreens available, too. Our team can help you find the right one for your needs.

Switch Out Your Moisturizer

As the weather gets colder, it also gets dryer. If you’re finding that your skin dries out more quickly, consider switching to a thicker moisturizer. You can also take steps like avoiding washing with hot water and using a humidifier when you sleep. There are also a variety of other products that can help moisturize your skin like hyaluronic acid serums – consider adding one during the colder months for an extra boost.

Start Using Retinol

Retinol is one of the most effective ways to reverse many of the negative impacts the sun and environment can take on your skin. If you don’t spend much time out in the sun, it can be beneficial to add a retinol product during the colder months. Retinol can make your skin photosensitive, so it’s important to keep your skin protected when you use it (or only use it at night). If you’re unsure where to start with retinol, our skincare specialists can help.
