Juvederm and Restylane: Why Have They Gained Such Popularity?

Posted on February 25, 2014 by: Dr. Rocheford

With so many advances in medical and aesthetic technology, it’s no wonder that more and more individuals are turning to plastic surgery to rejuvenate their appearance. However, some would prefer a non-surgical method to improve their facial features. Consider this overview on why Juvederm and Restylane have gained so much popularity over the past several years.

Juvederm

Approved by the FDA as an effective and long-lasting dermal filler Juvederm isa smooth gel-type filler made from a natural substance known as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and is responsible for maintaining skin volume and hydration. Juvederm can be used to provide a number of benefits, including:

  • Plumping folds from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth, also known as nasal labial lines.
  • Reducing marionette lines, or downturned creases at the corners of the lips.
  • Augmenting thin lips.
  • Filling prominent vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows.
  • Reducing or eliminating the appearance of acne and trauma scars.
  • Plumping hollow contours below the eyes.

Juvederm has also been shown to fill wrinkles and furrows that cannot be treated using Botox injections. While traditional Juvederm injections typically last anywhere from 6-9 months, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus have been shown to last up to a year.

Restylane

Approved by the FDA in February of 2004, Restylane also utilizes a clear gel formation of hyaluronic acid to add volume to the skin and correct moderate-to-severe facial folds and wrinkles. Similar to Juvederm, Restylane works immediately to smooth away wrinkles, nasolabial lines, and furrow lines for a younger-looking appearance. Another reason that Restylane is so popular is that it is biocompatible with the human body, meaning that there is no risk for allergic reaction and it is eventually broken down naturally. Restylane has also been shown to last up to 18 months.
