Scar revision surgery refers to a group of procedures that are done to partially remove scar tissue following surgery or injury, or to make the scar(s) less noticeable. The specific procedure that is performed depends on the type of scar; its cause, location, and size; and the characteristics of the patient's skin. Traumatic scars or previous surgical scars can sometimes be cosmetically unappealing. Depending on your particular scar, revision may improve its appearance. Dr. Rocheford will need to evaluate your scar to determine its potential for improvement and whether or not it can be revised in the office. If possible, revision will take place at the next appointment under local anesthesia. Internal dissolving stitches will be used. The scar will be red and firm for several weeks to months. Sun protection of SPF 15 or higher must be used for one year following revision to minimize scarring.
