Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting: Which is Right for You?

Jeans-with-Tape-Measure-300x199When it comes to achieving your best body in time for summer, you’ve been following the rules.  You’ve been eating right and exercising, and drinking plenty of water each day.  You’re happy with your progress so far – but there are a few parts of your body that just aren’t responding to diet and exercise, no matter how much you do.

Our bodies tend to hold onto certain fat deposits, thanks to a combination of lifestyle and genetics.  Many people are simply prone to storing fat in their stomachs, thighs, buttocks, and other areas.  This may make it difficult for you to achieve your ideal body, even though you’ve been working hard these past few months.

If the above sounds familiar to you, it might be time to schedule an appointment with Heather Rocheford, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Rocheford Plastic Surgery.  Based in Woodbury, Minnesota (also serving the St. Paul/Minneapolis areas), Dr. Rocheford is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in body contouring procedures like liposuction.

One of the most popular questions she gets asked is which body contouring option is the best choice.  The answer, of course, depends on the needs and goals of the patient.  Let’s take a look at the differences between the two:

  • Traditional liposuction is an invasive procedure that allows Dr. Rocheford to aggressively target fat deposits within the body. Before suctioning out these fat deposits, Dr. Rocheford infiltrates the area with a special fluid, which helps minimize blood loss and post-operative pain.  Liposuction is best for faster results; however, patients will need to devote 4-6 weeks to recovery before resuming their daily activities and normal exercise regimen.
  • Laser liposuction is an innovative non-invasive procedure that targets fat cells underneath the skin. The fat cells are slowly destroyed over time and removed by the body’s waste removal processes.  CoolSculpting, which freezes the fat cells.  CoolSculpting doesn’t require anesthesia; however, it may take longer for people to see results, and these results will not be as dramatic as those achieved through liposuction.

Coolsuclpting relies on the body to remove fat cells – liposuction removes them definitively. Liposuction is ideal for significant body contouring in the stomach and thigh areas. Small areas can be treated under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.
