How Do I Know If I Need to Have a Mole Removed?

Posted on October 5, 2016 by: Dr. Rocheford

You made the most of this past summer – and now that colder weather is finally setting in again, you’re looking forward to gearing up for the holiday season.

But before you shift your focus on finding that perfect gift or what you’ll cook for Thanksgiving, you’re wondering: is it time to finally get that mole removed?

What Is Mole Removal?

Whether it’s a prominent mole you’ve dealt with all of your life or one that has just started to bother you, mole removal is a surprisingly easy and efficient procedure.  At Rocheford Plastic Surgery in Woodbury, Minnesota – serving the greater Minnesota/St. Paul metro region – board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Heather Rocheford can remove up to five moles at one time.

The mole removal procedure takes place under local anesthesia in Dr. Rocheford’s office.  Most moles only require a few stitches underneath the skin, which dissolve on their own.  If any external stitches are required, they’ll be removed one week after the procedure.

After The Procedure

Most patients will have a scar that lasts for up to a year; patients will need to carefully protect the scar from the sun by wearing SPF 30+ sunscreen.  Doing so will help prevent permanent scarring.

Some moles can be a sign of skin cancer, which can be caused by excessive sun damage. If Dr. Rocheford suspects that the mole might be a sign of something more serious, she’ll send the dissected mole to a lab for further examination.
